Tips on sharing data for forensic users.

What should be included with the .lgs file for new users to TruView?

There are different ways to share the .lgs file.

Experienced users simply share the .lgs file when they know the end viewer has the TruView program loaded to their computers. This is done via external media or via network sharing.

For routine sharing with the same group of people the .lgs files get uploaded to a secure network server folder and users simply access the file to download .lgs and open and review it locally. Know that currently viewing (opening) .lgs files located on a network drive is not supported. When annotations and mark-up are created in the .lgs the modified version should be saved to the local hard drive and a copy uploaded to share.

NOTE: IF A LIBRARY OF .LGS FILES NEED NETWORK ACCESS THERE ARE SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS (CYCLONE ENTERPRISE - TRUVIEW LIVE) THAT CAN BE USED FOR MULTIPLE USERS AND REPEATED HIGH SPEED NETWORK ACCESS TO THE POINT CLOUD DATA.

When sharing 3D Point Cloud data (.lgs files) with new users or until a routine is developed it is recommended to supply the consumer the software and instructions. Know that old USB 1.0 speed devices are not to be used. When using USB 2.0 drives the slower transfer speeds can operate but it is not desired. It is best to obtain USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 media or use a dedicated SSD external drive.

Caution: Most USB Drives are sold with FAT32 formatting. FAT32 hard drive format style is not supported!

Please format the media to either hard drive format type:

  • ExFAT
  • NTSF

Suggested Template for Sharing TruView Data

The image below shows a parent folder (4_Deliverables .lgs) where a suggested layout of what files can be provided on the USB Media.

The files supplied can vary.

In a typical major investigation for public safety the Map360 Evidence Report is usually provided. As a .pdf document this can be rapidly opened and reviewed without loading any software to the viewing computer and this is frequently listed as 1_Map360 Evidence Report 21-xxxx.pdf

The folder format of adding a 1_ , 2_ etc. will list the files as they should be opened by the user.

2_Viewing 3D Data INSTRUCTIONS.pdf

Each agency should draft and maintain an instruction sheet that describes what the TruView is, provided detailed instructions on opening the .lgs file, and offer internal agency contacts for support. Additionally external links to training resources like this course covering the operation of the TruView software can be included in this document.

3_TruView Portable v2022.xx.zip

Include the latest version of the TruView Portable viewer. Leave this file in the .zip compressed file format. The end viewing users should decompress (unzip) the files.

4_TruView Program Installer v2022.xx.zip

Including the windows program installer for TruView offers the end users the option to rapidly load the software to their computer. IT Support and users with administrator permissions will have the latest version to install.

5_LGS Case No Version No.lgs

Provide a clear name and version tracking format for the .lgs file.

6_Excel Evidence Summary.xlsx

While not required, when complex scenes have numerous chain of custody tracking numbers;

  • Placard #;
  • Property Evidence #;
  • Lab Submission #,
  • GeoTagged Y/N;
  • DNA Result,
  • Ballistic Result,
  • Current Stored Location etc.

the inclusion of a spread sheet that can be opened quickly offers the investigating team a rapid review of the included evidence in the 3D Deliverable .lgs file.

  • What items of evidence are included in the packaged .lgs file,
  • Marked Evidence in the Map360 Evidence Report.
  • Rapidly Identifying What State Exhibit # to assign to each item of evidence and know what exact items need to be offered into evidence as an included part of the .lgs file.

Tip!

A thumbnail .jpg image can be rapidly screen captured from Register 360 showing the included Assets in the .lgs file and/or included the published Register 360 Registration Report.pdf document that includes asset images.
